Michelangelo's David ( right hand detail ) 1501-1504
Marble sculpture
Galleria dell'accademia, Firenze
Michelangelo's David which is housed in the Galleria dell'Academia in Florence, is one of the most famous works of art.
Michelangelo began his masterpiece in 1501. It is larger that life-size and his right hand is out of proportion with the rest of the body so as to emphasise that David was Manu Fortis ( strong hand ).
Before Michelangelo two sculptors, Agostino di Duccio and, later, Antonio Rossellino, worked on the same block of Carrara marble that later gave life to the David. Both abandoned it, because the block of marble was too difficult to work with..
In 1501 the marble - defined as "male abbozatum et sculptum" - arrived in the hands of a twenty-five year old Michelangelo who, despite these difficult premises, was not discouraged. Within three years, the David was finished in 1504
